A previous proposal specified a Shou Sugi Ban charred finish over the exterior, a significant enlargement of all floor levels, and the addition of a large basement (an oddity in Los Angeles). In essence, the proposal was an on-trend styling of the building's exterior and a life-styling of its interior that prioritized resale value over lived experience. With the addition of a loggia-like structure, the current scheme moderately enlarges the main living area while preserving the charm of the existing house. This arbitrariness of Japanese cladding over an American vernacular form became a departure point for the current proposal. Rather than reconcile the relationship between parts, this redesign tolerates the discordance between the arbitary use of material and style. Seemingly random in material, color, and form, the loggia becomes a fleeting complement to the existing house - a threshold between the house and its surrounding landscape. Its color, rather than referring to the house, refers to the house's vegetation. The project takes as its example the mostly ignored shower curtain in opposition to the disciplinary all-time-favorite, the glass curtain wall. Their oppositional states at both ends of the spectrum of architectural discourse are mirrored in their qualities: keeping water in vs. keeping it out, soft vs. hard, private vs. public, interior vs. exterior.&nbsp; Presented by Tekena Koko, the 2021- 2023 design fellow at the school of architecture, the show includes objects existing between landscape media and architecture. Accompanied by a paper titled Terrafictions, the contents dealing with landscape focus on media. Those concerned with architecture deal with grids, grid deformations, and questions that circle around where architecture ends or begins. On display are works by Olivia Buntin, whose object flickers between a sculpture and a model. Christiana Huss figures in body parts into grids. Aleksandr Delev traces landscape psychogeography via furniture design. Kerry Maguire makes landscape proxies. While Tekena Koko, Brooke Bower, and Maggie Bailey fuse architecture surfaces and link them to bodily gestures in their film.&nbsp; Olivia Buntin is an Interior designer and recent graduate of the BSID program at UTSOA. Christiana Huss is an M.Arch student at UTSOA. Aleksandr Delev is an architect who designs semi-functional products. &nbsp; Kerry Maguire is a musician and a multidisciplinary artist working in printmaking and sculpture. Brooke Bower is an MSID student at UTSOA and holds a BFA in dance. Maggie M. Bailey is an award-winning producer and director, working in both narrative and documentary film. In place of appropriating the space of worship to achieve a sacred ambiance, the project configures the clothing rack to stage occurrences that slip in and out of divine reverence.
